I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I realised I wanted to have children. I think I always put it to the back of my mind, because I was single, because I was gay. I mean, they are two pretty big barriers to traditional conception. I don’t think I ever really gave it that much thought, maybe I just presumed that I wouldn’t, couldn’t even…
The law changes all the time. A continuous catalogue of amendments, acts, and appeals, and just one more signature on yet another piece of paper. But, in 2019 something shifted. From one small piece of legislation, an impossible story grew. And for the first time, I could begin to imagine. Who you were, and who I could become.

In 2019, the law in the UK changed to allow for single father surrogacy. Section 54a of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008 now allows single people to apply for parental orders, to have access to surrogacy leave and pay, to obtain appropriate birth certificates, and to authenticate their parenthood.
With videography by Ben Horrigan for Studio 91 Media (www.studio91media.co.uk) and music composed by BAFTA and Academy Award winner Chris Benstead (Gravity, The Gentleman, No Time to Die), ‘From Me to Us’ is an important project that provides the space for discussions about parenthood, whilst documenting the political change against a backdrop of autobiographical experiences.
‘From Me To Us’ is supported by Arts Council England, Contact, hÅb, and Brilliant Beginnings.
